About Electrical Panel Upgrades

An electrical panel is typically good for 25-50 years, depending on multiple factors such as: exposure to elements (heat, rain, etc.); panel make, model and manufacturer; quality of original installation; and quality of upkeep and service over the life of the panel.

We recommend having a licensed electrician inspect panels over 30 years old to ensure safety. You can read our article here to learn more about old electrical panels that need to be replaced as soon as possible.

Any of the following symptoms indicate you should have a licensed electrician evaluate whether your panel needs to be replaced:

  • Scorched outlets
  • Burnt smell coming from panel or outlets
  • Heat around the panel/breakers
  • Popping, buzzing or crackling noises
  • Rust or corrosion inside the panel
  • Lights flickering or dimming
  • Breakers that repeatedly trip
  • Partial or full power outage (not due to power company interruption)
  • Appliances operating at lower capacity

The total cost of a 200 amp panel upgrade, including materials, permit, and labor is typically $4,500 – $5,000. There are several factors that can affect the price, so the best way to determine cost is to get an estimate for your specific situation and needs.

When working with Authentic Electric, after the estimate for the panel upgrade has been accepted by the homeowner or business, the following occurs:

  • In preparation of the panel upgrade:
    • The electrician obtains a permit from the city or county.
    • The electrician contacts the power company to schedule the power outage for the panel replacement, and then schedules an inspection with the city or county for an inspection on the day of the panel change.
    • The electrician does a day of preliminary work (this could be any time before the panel upgrade). This makes the day of the panel change go more quickly and smoothly, which minimizes the power outage on the day of the panel change.
  • On the day of the panel upgrade:
    • The power company disconnects power.
    • The electrician removes the old panel and installs the new panel.
    • An inspection occurs and the inspector notifies the power company that the power can be restored.
    • Once power is reestablished, the electrician verifies that all breakers function properly.

With Authentic Electric, after the acceptance of the estimate, the entire panel upgrade process typically takes 3-6 weeks depending on the the power company’s schedule.

In emergency situations, the process goes much quicker because the power company prioritizes urgent needs.

On the day that the old panel is replaced, the power is typically out for 6-8 hours. While you are welcome to stay in your home during the upgrade, you can also choose to spend the day elsewhere.

Authentic Electric provides panel upgrades in Southern Arizona, including areas such as Tucson, Oro Valley, Catalina, Saddlebrooke, Marana, Catalina Foothills, Tanque Verde, Vail, Sahuarita, Green Valley, Sonoita, Corona de Tucson and Benson.
